Vladimir Nabokov las hizo p\u00fablicas hace varias d\u00e9cadas, cuando sugiri\u00f3 que la Universidad de Cornell grabara sus clases de literatura. <\/p>\n<p>Pero muy poco ha cambiado. En la mayor\u00eda de universidades, los curr\u00edculos y los m\u00e9todos de ense\u00f1anza no han tenido ajustes importantes desde mitad del siglo XX, como lo dijo Larry Summers, exrector de Harvard, en un art\u00edculo en el New York Times. En los colegios, con notables excepciones, tambi\u00e9n rige la \u201cdictadura de clase\u201d, como llaman algunos maestros ocurrentes al peso diario de impartir lecciones repetitivas. <\/p>\n<p>Lo llamativo es que el sistema se haya mantenido aunque el mundo haya cambiado. Si es tedioso para los profesores, lo es aun m\u00e1s para estudiantes que nacieron en la era digital: los que pasan buena parte del d\u00eda en las redes sociales, hacen tareas con materiales que bajan de la red y dedican el 80% del tiempo que est\u00e1n en l\u00ednea a ver videos. <\/p>\n<p>Por eso son alentadoras dos innovaciones que se est\u00e1n abriendo paso. La primera es la explosi\u00f3n de cursos en l\u00ednea. Una legi\u00f3n de universidades, empresas, entidades estatales y profesores est\u00e1n grabando cursos virtuales sobre temas tan diversos como \u00e1lgebra, historia antigua, derecho penal o dise\u00f1o industrial. Aunque est\u00e1n en fase experimental, iniciativas como Coursera, edX, TareasPlus o Khan Academy ya han respondido la inquietud de Nabokov: basta una c\u00e1mara, acceso a Youtube y creatividad docente para evitar la repetici\u00f3n. <\/p>\n<p>Pero un video no reemplaza la interacci\u00f3n personal, ni el acompa\u00f1amiento cercano de un profesor presencial. Por eso el uso m\u00e1s promisorio de las clases virtuales consiste en ser parte de \u201ccursos invertidos\u201d, en los que los alumnos vean en sus casas las lecciones que hoy reciben en las aulas, y resuelvan en las aulas los problemas y ejercicios que hoy se asignan como tareas para la casa. <\/p>\n<p>Esta innovaci\u00f3n aprovecha las ventajas de los dos modelos. De un lado, se transmite la informaci\u00f3n necesaria en tutoriales grabados de alta calidad, seleccionados no s\u00f3lo de los materiales grabados por el profesor del curso, sino del universo de lecciones disponibles en l\u00ednea. Del otro, el tiempo de clase se dedica a ejercicios de aprendizaje activo, desde resoluci\u00f3n individual de problemas hasta debates colectivos, en los que el profesor acompa\u00f1a de forma m\u00e1s personalizada a cada estudiante y profundiza los conocimientos b\u00e1sicos. <\/p>\n<p>Aunque es muy temprano para sacar conclusiones, las universidades y los colegios que est\u00e1n experimentando con cursos invertidos han reportado mejor\u00edas notables en logros acad\u00e9micos y satisfacci\u00f3n de estudiantes y profesores. Por eso se est\u00e1n difundiendo r\u00e1pidamente en Europa, Estados Unidos y, t\u00edmidamente, en otras regiones.<\/p>\n<p> Por supuesto, estas innovaciones no son la soluci\u00f3n a todos los problemas y crean algunos nuevos. Por ejemplo, las tasas de deserci\u00f3n son altas en los cursos en l\u00ednea . Y algunos profesores temen que su rol cambie de protagonistas a actores de reparto en las clases presenciales. Son dudas razonables que, sin embargo, no justifican el disfuncional statu quo.
