To date, eighteen countries have developed and approved NAPs on business and human rights, including in 2013:\u00a0the United Kingdom and the Netherlands;\u00a0in 2014: Denmark and Finland;\u00a0in 2015: Lithuania,\u00a0Sweden,\u00a0Norway,\u00a0and Colombia;\u00a0in 2016: the United Kingdom\u2019s section iteration, Italy, Switzerland,\u00a0the United States,\u00a0and Germany, and in 2017: France, Poland, Indonesia, Belgium,\u00a0Spain, and Chile.<\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, a number of other States are in the process of developing NAPs on business and human rights or have publicly announced an intention to do so\u2014including an increasing number of countries in the Latin American and ASEAN regions.\u00a0As the creation of NAPs on business and human rights continues to proliferate globally, it is essential that existing NAPs be closely analyzed in terms of their content and processes in order to assess best practice and to suggest areas for improvement going forward.<\/span><\/p>\n

In November 2014, ICAR and ECCJ published the first\u00a0Assessment of Existing National Action Plans (NAPs) on Business and Human Rights<\/em><\/a>, which includes assessments of the NAPs of the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Denmark, and Finland. In\u00a0November 2015, an updated assessment<\/a>\u00a0report including the assessments of the Lithuanian and Swedish NAPs was published by ICAR and ECCJ.<\/span><\/p>\n

This August 2017 report updates the ICAR-ECCJ November 2015 publication by incorporating assessments of the NAPs of Norway, Colombia, United Kingdom (2016 iteration), Italy, Switzerland, and United States. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These structured NAPs assessments are based on the\u00a0ICAR-Danish Human Rights Institute (DIHR)\u00a0NAPs Toolkit<\/a>,\u00a0released in June 2014, which provides a set of 25 criteria by which the content of NAPs and the process undertaken by States in developing them can be assessed.\u00a0The ICAR-ECCJ-Dejusticia assessments of existing NAPs builds on the ICAR-DIHR NAPs Toolkit to help provide critical and structured feedback to States who have already developed NAPs and to provide a reference point for States that are on the path to developing them.<\/span><\/p>\n
