Follow the journey of ordinary Venezuelans risking it all in search of better lives, through the eyes and lens of these fearless journalists and photographers, in stories woven through words, videos and powerful images.<\/em><\/p>\n

At least 1.5 million Venezuelans have left their country in the last two years, using Colombia, specifically C\u00facuta in the Norte de Santander department, as the primary escape route. Venezuela is experiencing diaspora growth without precedent, caused by hyperinflation that has been worsening since 2016, manifested in symbolic salaries, bankruptcy, hunger and violence.<\/p>\n

In May of this year, 13 journalists were invited by Dejusticia and Provea to this border region to describe, through seven stories, what is happening personally for the thousands of families crossing the Sim\u00f3n Bolivar bridge to leave Venezuela.<\/p>\n

This multimedia, journalistic special is the result of the workshop \u201cTools for covering a country in conflict,\u201d which was carried out in C\u00facuta in May of 2018 by the human rights organizations Dejusticia (Colombia) and Provea (Venezuela), with the support of the Ford Foundation and the Open Society Foundation.<\/p>\n

The journalists are part of (or contributors to) independent media, the majority digital, dedicated to the defense of the free press in Venezuela: RunRun.\u200bes<\/a><\/span> (Abrahan Moncada and Lorena Mel\u00e9ndez), Correo del Caron\u00ed<\/a><\/span> (Fabiola Ferrero and Clavel Rangel), El Pitazo<\/a><\/span> (Yaikel Dorta and Johanna Osorio), NTN24<\/a><\/span> (Rub\u00e9n Sevilla and Rafael Hern\u00e1ndez) and Cr\u00f3nica Uno<\/a><\/span> (Francisco Bruzco and Carmen Inojosa).<\/p>\n

This special was edited by journalists Carolina Guti\u00e9rrez Torres<\/a><\/span>, Ang\u00e9lica Mar\u00eda Cuevas<\/a><\/span>, coordinators of the Office of Communications at Dejusticia; the editor of El Espectador<\/i>, Nelson Fredy Padilla; and photographer Juan Arredondo<\/a><\/span>, a contributor to National Geographic<\/i> and The New York Times<\/i>, and was reproduced by the participating media outlets in Venezuela.<\/p>\n

Over the course of a week in July of this year, the Colombian newspaper, El Espectador<\/i> published one story per day to their website and in their printed paper. Monday, July 23 was: \u201cThe Sim\u00f3n Bol\u00edvar Bridge: the Eyewitness of a Crisis,\u201d Tuesday, July 24: \u201cRenouncing Venezuela to Not Go to Bed Hungry,\u201d Wednesday, July 25: \u201cMigrating to Save the Life of a Child,\u201d Thursday, July 26: \u201cJesus\u2019s Flight,\u201d Friday, July 27: \u201cA Rose Along the Journey,\u201d Saturday, July 28: \u201cThe Yukpa Lived in C\u00facuta for a Year and We Just Found Out,\u201d and Sunday, July 29: \u201cA Journey Towards Uncertainty.\u201d<\/p>\n
