Mitigating Criminal Law Addiction: Alternatives to Prison for Drug-related Offenses

This report was prepared with the Colectivo de Estudios Drogas y Derecho and discusses alternatives to prison for drug-related offenses.

This document summarizes the progress made in the discussion on alternatives to imprisonment for minor drug offenses in the Americas. It presents some reasons why it is urgent to implement this type of measures in the region and discusses the pertinence of some of the alternatives implemented. Finally, it concludes with recommendations to States to advance the adoption of alternatives to human rights-based detention that are effective in reducing prison overcrowding and in protecting public safety and health.
